Packsack, deadwood, hummingbird 70 years of folding boats from Wismar
Four zones - four perspectives - one theme
The first major exhibition on the history of consumer goods production opens its doors to visitors. In focus: the folding boats from the Mathias Thesen shipyard in Wismar (MTW)
Ship and boat building has a long and unique tradition in the Hanseatic city of Wismar, as well as a lively present. The recent history of the current shipyard site has its origins in a ship repair base dating back to 1946, which still operates today as the only compact shipyard in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The site name Mathias-Thesen-Werft - MTW for short - has made a particularly strong impression on the public consciousness, having shaped the cityscape for more than 50 years. However, it was not only fishing, container, expedition, research and cruise ships that were launched in the Hanseatic city from 1951 onwards. Smaller boats with a special wooden design have also seen the light of day here. Now, for the first time, all types of folding boats produced in Wismar are on display under one roof.
In four zones, the exhibition focuses on the multifaceted history of the folding boat as a consumer good, moving between the poles of innovation and lifestyle.

Camping scenario
Feel like you're on summer vacation again in 1975: our camping scenery brings back memories of days gone by. The authentic small and large everyday objects from GDR production are likely to be fond memories for many visitors. A hidden object picture of the past. The camping zone is hidden at the back of the picnic area.
Scalare 250” catamaran
The world's first folding catamaran is a highlight among folding boats. The “Scalare 250” is a two-hull boat connected to a habitable 11 square meter bridge superstructure. With a length of 3m and a width of 2.5m, it is the largest and heaviest exhibit in this special exhibition. Due to the size of the “Scalare 250”, there was only room for it in our air hall.
Folding boat two-seater
These folding boats cannot be overlooked. In an impressive installation, you can experience the folding boats in the “Kolibri” range from a completely new perspective. From the Kolibri type 1 to 4, via the Kolibri Tramp model and the Delphin 85, the maneuverable two-seater folding boats are directly compared.
