European Heritage Day

For this year's Heritage Open Day, the Technical State Museum MV invites you to a unique behind-the-scenes experience between 11 am and 2 pm. The focus is on two extraordinary projects that shine through passion and voluntary dedication:

The Rebirth of the Wismar Swimming Hall Mosaic
The striking metal relief by artist Franziska Seiffert adorned the old Wismar swimming hall from 1979 to 1999, before being placed in museum storage from 2016 onwards. Thanks to funding from the Bürgerstiftung Wismar and the dedicated commitment of the Mobile Jugendbauhütte Wismar, the artwork was saved and has been on display in the entrance area of the phanTECHNIKUM since 2025. The Jugendbauhütte spent over 100 working hours thoroughly researching, restoring, and reinterpreting the piece in a condensed form for its new presentation in the foyer. Our collections officer Menno Dirks will introduce you on the day to the fascinating conservation challenges this project presented.

Engineering Craftsmanship and Collector's Pride in the EARTH Exhibition
A further highlight awaits you in our bicycle exhibition in the "Earth" section. The majority of the exhibits on display are owed to the tireless dedication of Jürgen Schießer. As a passionate collector of historic bicycles, he continues to support the phanTECHNIKUM with expert knowledge and contributes his technical expertise on a voluntary basis. Since 1992, he has restored more than 50 bicycles by hand with painstaking precision — from historic penny-farthings to modern models. The collector will be personally on site on Heritage Open Day to share the intricate restoration processes and numerous insider anecdotes with you!
