The Technical State Museum M-V

In the phanTECHNIKUM in Wismar, the Technical State Museum of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern presents exhibits from the world of technology and the history of technology. The focus is on the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern region.

We impart technical knowledge with exhibits from the past, which we bring to life here. With the technikSchule, the phanTECHNIKUM is also a recognized extracurricular place of learning. Find out more under EDUCATION & MEDIATION.

The phanTECHNIKUM presents an exhibition that can be experienced in a varied and interactive way. Numerous experiments, impressive models and hands-on technology make the phanTECHNIKUM a living museum.
Elements structure the exhibition, turning the history of technology into an experience: More about the phanTECHNIKUM permanent exhibition

In addition to exhibitions and events, a major task of the Technical State Museum M-V is to preserve the history of technology in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern for the future. We preserve evidence of the history of the state and the city of Wismar, with a focus on technology. Our COLLECTION comprises a total of around 6,500 objects.

Collection & Library

The collection of the Technical State Museum comprises around 6,500 objects, mainly relating to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

The inventors come from our federal state and the objects were produced or used here. Visitors can find further evidence of regional technological history in the phanTECHNIKUM, the permanent exhibition of the State Museum of Technology.
One focus of the collection is the state's aviation history. The original “Jung Mecklenburg” glider from 1933 is a particularly impressive piece and is on display in the permanent exhibition, as is the combustion chamber of an A4 rocket, which is both a testimony to a criminal war and an example of early space travel.

Further developments from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are presented in the “Flashlights” exhibition area. An artificial heart developed by the Rostock physician Horst Klinkmann (born 1935 in Teterow) is shown, as is a magneto ignition device constructed by Siegfried Marcus (Malchin 1831 - Vienna 1898).

An outstanding testimony to Wismar's industrial history is a Podeus crawler tractor from the period 1919 to 1926, which was discovered in Finland and acquired by the Technical State Museum in 2016.

A steam engine from around 1900, produced in Leipzig, which was used in the distillery in Wesenberg, and a diesel engine from the Gorch Fock from 1958 can be seen in the permanent exhibition. Other power-generating machines are still in storage, including a gas engine from 1911, a large steam engine from 1952 and a wind turbine constructed by Herbert Luther from Güstrow in 1989.

A major focus of the museum is the collection of the German Welding Society (DVS). These objects, for example, trace the development of welding torches from the late 19th century to the present.

The largest part of the collection is the communication and computing technology with more than 1,800 objects, including 40 computers, 140 cameras and 180 radios. Among the radios, those manufactured in Neustadt-Glewe and Greifswald are of particular importance to us. These exhibits are not currently on display.

A special treasure, which is to be given more prominence in the future, is the collection of more than forty automobiles and motorcycles. This collection also includes the frame of a dismountable motorcycle developed by engineer Hans Seehase (Rostock Warnemünde 1887 – Schalksmühle 1974). Due to a lack of space, the “Mobility” collection is currently not on display.

With its broad view of the history of technology in Mecklenburg and Western Pomerania, our archive is unique for our federal state! With around 160 linear meters, we are certainly one of the smaller institutions, but allow research into almost all areas of technology in MV and beyond. Our holdings include not only written documents but also images, which can be researched in our reading room by prior arrangement and appointment.

Many of these documents originate from the GDR past and the GDR was a centrally organized state with equally centrally controlled production. In this respect, our documents do not refer exclusively to the technical production in our country, often assemblies were only produced here but not developed, the device was also completed outside our federal state. Operating manuals etc. were also produced there. Our archive mostly refers to equipment that was used in our federal state and which is also part of our collection. However, there are also solitary documents that have no connection to our collection, but nevertheless refer to the unique history of technology in MV.

After all, the first diving apparatus was developed here, the first rocket was launched into space and aviation pioneer Otto Lilienthal also came from MV.

Two particular focal points of our archive are the estate of the inventor and engineer Hans Seehase (1887-1974) - in addition to building slide rules and drawing instruments, he was also involved in the development of airplanes - and the bicycle collection of Guntram Trost. This collection offers a rich collection of material on cycling clubs in Mecklenburg and Western Pomerania since the end of the 19th century.

With 6000 volumes on almost all areas of the history of technology in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, we have a small but excellent reference library that not only helps us scientists at the TLM in our research, but hopefully also supports your research.

The library is very popular with student groups during our joint seminars in cooperation with the University of Wismar, but also with pupils from our partner schools during our various workshops. We are currently planning to create an overview of the titles via BVS as part of the europeana library software. This will allow users to find out about the titles from the comfort of their own home or classroom and then simply pre-order them online. A small reading room allows you to study our books in our administration building “Haus des Gastes” - Zum Festplatz 34, 23966 Wismar. Our librarian is looking forward to your order.

Special treasures of our library are the oldest books, the edition of the “Anleitung zum Entwerfen von Bauholz Anschlägen und zur zweckmäßigsten Aufarbeitung, Verwendung und Ersparung des Holzes, besonders des Eichenholzes, für Forstmänner bearbeitet von Christian Hundeshagen”, published in Tübingen in 1818, and the edition of Giershagen's “Instruction for the use of the rescue apparatus commonly used on the Prussian coast and of boats on high seas and in surf, as well as instructions for rescuing drowning victims and reviving those who appear to have drowned”, published in Greifswald in 1861. The main focus of our library is on publications on the history of transportation.

Made in MV

Controversial discourses on technical achievements are as old and legitimate as their use. As third places, museums in particular offer participation spaces for a heterogeneous audience with constantly changing demands. Empirical studies have shown that museums have a considerable influence on their audiences: museum content is not consumed passively or accepted uncritically, but rather processed in an active process in the visitor's museum and life experience.

Team

The staff of the Technisches Landesmuseum M-V will be happy to answer any questions, suggestions, ideas or exchanges you may have.
