Film Screening: A Call to Spy

On International Museum Day, we will be screening the film "A Call to Spy" (2019) by Lydia Dean Pilcher at 2:00 PM. This gripping thriller tells the story of three women serving in the British Secret Service during World War II, who build an undercover spy network in occupied France.

The screening is part of the supporting program for the city-wide storefront exhibition "THEN NOW HERE – Women in the Resistance against National Socialism." This initiative by the "OMAS gegen RECHTS Wismar" (Grannies against the Right) shines a light on the often forgotten, courageous, and high-risk resistance of women who countered the totalitarian system with their humanity. From April 16 to May 31, 2026, posters at various locations throughout Wismar will commemorate these pioneers of civil courage.

One of these 22 posters is displayed at the entrance of the phanTECHNIKUM and commemorates one of the women portrayed in the film: Noor Inayat Khan. The story of the Indian-born wireless operator for the British SOE (Special Operations Executive) is marked by extraordinary bravery. Under the codename "Madeleine," she was the first female wireless operator to work for a British agent ring in occupied Paris. Despite numerous arrests in her circle, she maintained vital radio communication with London for months. Following her betrayal and arrest by the Gestapo, she was ultimately murdered in the Dachau concentration camp in September 1944. This two-hour feature film brings her story and those of her fellow agents to life.
