The history of the museum
1961
The State Museum of Technology was founded under the name “Polytechnic Museum”. Between 1961 and 1994, it was one of the most popular destinations in Schwerin. The exhibition in the orangery of the castle was considered one of the few museum institutions for technology and production in the GDR.
When the museum moved out of the castle after 1990, the state sponsorship ended, and was taken over by the Verein Technisches Landesmuseum Mecklenburg-Vorpommern e.V., founded in 1996. The state museum of technology moved into the Schwerin Marstall and in 2002 into the Wismar Glashaus.
2012
The exhibition in the Marstall was closed on January 31, 2011 and the move to Wismar began. The Wismar Glass House with its technology exhibition was still open until August 31, 2012. The previous exhibitions are now combined under one roof in the phanTECHNIKUM. The history of technology in the federal state is presented here in an attractive and modern setting. The museum is run by the Technisches Landesmuseum Mecklenburg-Vorpommern gemeinnützige Betriebsgesellschaft mbH.
After the grand opening for partners, helpers and sponsors on November 26, 2012, the phanTECHNIKUM opened its doors to visitors for the first time on December 1, 2012.
Today
The museum's work focuses on the technological history of the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The collection focuses on, among other things, aircraft construction and aviation history, energy generation, welding technology and ship propulsion technologies. Regularly changing special exhibitions, events and educational programs round out the museum and exhibition concept.
